Post Office Hotel, Camooweal
As you cross the border from Northern Territory travelling into Queensland on the Barkly Highway the first bit of civilisation you are met with is a town called Camooweal. We have stayed out the back of the Post Office Hotel and Pub in Camooweal a couple of times now for overnight stop overs. It is a proper camp area / caravan park with powered and non powered sites as well as toilet and shower blocks. And even an in ground pool!
Both times we have stayed there we have arrived mid-afternoon and both times we have spent all afternoon and most of the night at the pub. For such a small town, the pub gets a lot of people through. In the middle of the afternoon we were the only people there, but as the day progresses more and more people rock up for beers and a feed.
They have a couple of beers on tap. Inside the pub is air conditioned and nice and cool but we spent most of our time outside on the big verandah. Below the verandah they let us tie our dogs up so they could be with us. We met the bloke that owns the servo directly across the road from the pub. He has lived in Camooweal all his life. He can remember the town in its prime. A busy town, full of stockmen working on the cattle stations.
The food at the Camooweal Post Office Hotel is awesome. It was everything you could possibly expect from a country town pub. I had a tbone and it was perfect.
After way too many beers we headed back to our camper with the dogs. Even though it was after-hours and dark, we quietly snuck into the pool to cool down before bed. We have enjoyed staying at Camooweal both times we have travelled through there. If you ever find yourself there, I highly recommend a few schooners at the pub.
